Gonzo Travels

Off the cuff writing about the travels of a guy who people expect to be married, have kids, work the 9-5 and do all the other status quo nonsense.

Uyuni salt flats

Uyuni, Bolivia

My second visit to Uyuni, previously there on a disastrous three day trip from San Pedro de Atacama, where the jeep broke down twice and the driver did a runner. This time I arrived by train from Oruro, and it was one of the best train journeys I’ve ever done, even if I was blasted with dust, but that was my fault and everyone else’s in the carriage as we had the windows open taking photographs during the daylight.

Sleeping overnight after the fantastic train journey, a tour was booked first thing for 150Bs which was 100Bs cheaper than the cheeky fuckers hovering around the train station offered the night before. I’m a little down on Bolivia, from past experience crossing the desert and breaking down, and it seems like for every really nice person there’s a bullshitter trying it on. This is probably a product of poverty so I should shut up.

Photographer at work on the salt planes of Bolivia

Anyway, Uyuni and the day trip to the Salar de Uyuni is something that makes me love the place. The pace was leisurely and we got to see plenty of the flats, with time for obligatory ridiculous selfies and videos. We also got to watch the sun go down in the reflection on the watery part of the plains, which the 3 day tours didn’t see as they all left early. The driver was excellent, took group photos and roped someone in to sit on the top of his jeep and film a time-lapse while he drove around us doing silly poses.
