Gonzo Travels

Off the cuff writing about the travels of a guy who people expect to be married, have kids, work the 9-5 and do all the other status quo nonsense.

Shibuya at night

Japan Day 1: Shibuya, Tokyo

I’ve finally arrived. After almost not getting on the plane due to overbooking and several of us not being assigned a seat, my name was called and I was the last person boarding, despite arriving three hours early. Two people were not so lucky! Anyway, thirteen hours of aeroplane claustrophobia later and I’m in Tokyo, picking up my rail pass from the office in Haneda station, topping up my old Icoca card which surprisingly had ¥670 on it, and getting a 31 day SIM card (¥8500).

I’ve spent the day fighting the dizziness of jet lag, it doesn’t help that I cant sleep on planes, but it is what it is. I’ve checked into the Wise Owl Shubuya, a nice clean hostel very conveniently located and very popular. So popular I couldn’t tag on another couple of nights, so have to cross town tomorrow. I met up with a Norweigian guy to hang out and get food with after a walk around, settled on a large bowl of rice with pork cutlet, which came with miso and pickles (¥730). Like a lot of paces, you order at the machine which has some english translation, and collect when your order is called.

Time to attempt sleep!
